The Truth of Chocolate Yonhattan Pina 611

We Americans get a lot of candy every year, and eat it everyday. We don’t even know who makes it. Well did you know that in 2001 journalists discovered labor abuse of children in Ivory Coast cocoa plantations. U.S.A. Senator Tom Harkins, D-lowa and U.S. rep Elliot Engel, D-N-Y set up a commission  to eliminate cocoa companies to use children.

One course of action is to buy fair trade chocolate. Fair trade chocolate is chocolate which does not use child labor. In 2008-2009 150 children were rescued.

The public needs to be aware of this child abuse. Most of this is happening in West Africa,  Ivory coast and at the state Ghana. The documentary The Dark Side of Chocolate shows undercover agents went over there to see what happens.

The children that are being used to work as slaves are slowly being saved. We just need a little bit of more help and we can save all of them.
